HA12 - Task 1 Analysis

My genre of game is action role playing games. I will be analysing games such as Fallout 4, Skyrim and Dragon Age Inquisition.

Fallout 4 is an action RPG developed by Bethesda Studios and released in 2015. Previous fallout titles include Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Fallout 4 became a massive hit upon release and brought plenty of new features such as building settlements and upgrading them. The genre makes the game so much better, due to the huge range of activities and exploration you can do in the massive open world, as compared to other genres such as FPS, which are generally in small, tight maps whereas in fallout the world is huge. The voice acting and narrating in Fallout 4 is quite well done. Interacting with other people is quite easy and your character responds very well and professionally. The main character in the game is portrayed by how you play him or her. If you choose to be evil, your character will be portrayed as an evil person with bad karma whereas if you help others, it will be shown with your good karma. There are NPC characters in the game such as Raiders, who are bad characters and are well known for doing evil things such as killing of other innocent people. Overall, Fallout 4 is one of the greatest Action RPG games of all time as it ticks all the boxes in what makes an RTS game an amazing experience.




The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the fifth installment to the incredibly popular Elder Scrolls series, and was also developed by Bethesda Studios. Skyrim sold over 20 million copies and won multiple awards such as RPG game of the year and Game of the year. Skyrim is a great RPG experience and has plenty to do in its huge open world, such as buy a house and decorate it or upgrading your weapon and armour while exploring dungeons and slaying anything that is an enemy. The narrators of the game make the game much better, due to their medieval like accents and voices. Characters in Skyrim have a very medieval look, including dirt and scars on the face along with long hair. The main character can be made to either do good for the world of skyrim or become evil. Overall, Skyrim is also a great Action RPG which changed the RPG genre due to its huge success.





Dragon Age Inquisition is a game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. Previous Dragon Age games included Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2. ragon Age Inquisition was greeted with mostly positive reviews and won many awards such as Game of the Year awards. It is also another great example of an Action RPG as it involves plenty of combat and a huge world to explore. The narrating is also very good and makes the telling of the story much more interesting. The characters can be manipulated and judging by your actions, will either feel positive or negative about you. Even your companions can be changed depending on your relationship to them. Overall, Dragon Age Inquisition feels like an amazing RPG due to its many features such as companionship, customisation, combat and the tension that your actions may cause.

The Hypodermic Needle Model

The hypodermic needle model is a model of communications suggesting that an intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver. The model is rooted in 1930s behaviorism and is largely considered obsolete today.

The Inoculation Model

Inoculation Theory was developed by social psychologist William J. McGuire in 1961 to explain more about how attitudes and beliefs change, and more importantly, how to keep original attitudes and beliefs consistent in the face of persuasion attempts. Inoculation Theory continues to be studied today by communication, social psychology, and social science researchers. The theory has been assessed in varied context, including politics, health campaigns, and marketing, among others.


The Two-Step Flow Model

The two-step flow of communication model, or Multistep Flow Model, says that most people form their opinions under the influence of opinion leaders, who in turn are influenced by the mass media. So according to this model, ideas flow from mass media to opinion leaders, and from them to a wider population.





The Uses & Gratifications Theory


Uses and gratifications theory is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. UGT is an audience-centered approach to understanding mass communication.






The Reception Theory 

Reception theory is a version of reader response literary theory that emphasizes each particular reader's reception or interpretation in making meaning from a literary text. Reception theory is generally referred to as audience reception in the analysis of communications models.

HA10 Task 1 - Glossary

Media Text

Every description or representation of the world, fictional or otherwise, is an attempt to describe or define reality, and is in some way a construct of reality, a text. A text is any media product we wish to examine, whether it is a television program, a book, a poster, a popular song, the latest fashion, etc.

Semiotic's

Semiotics's the study of meaning-making, the study of sign processes and meaningful communication. This includes the study of signs and sign processes, indication, designation, likeness, analogy, metaphor, symbolism, signification, and communication.


Genre

A genre is a category. In gaming, a genre is a genre of game, for example, shooter, action, adventure, side scroller etc


Selection of Content

The aims of selection of content is to provide students with effective learning strategies. It is also used to assist people in identifying their preferred ways of learning. Selection of content can help develop skills needed to negotiate the curriculum and helps with self evaluation.

Construction of content
Codes are systems of signs, which create meaning. Codes can be divided into two categories – technical and symbolic. Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing something. There are general conventions in any medium, such as the use of interviewee quotes in a print article, but conventions are also genre specific. Codes and conventions are used together in any study of genre – it is not enough to discuss a technical code used such as camera work, without saying how it is conventionally used in a genre.

 

Modes of Address

Modes of address can be defined as the ways in which relations between addresser and addressee are constructed in a text.

HA9 Task 1 - Glossary

Quantitative Research

In natural sciences and social sciences, quantitative research is the systematic empirical investigation of observable phenomena via statistical, mathematical or computational techniques. Quantitative methods are suited for finding out the who, what, where, when and why's.




Qualitative Research

Qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research.


Audience Profiling

Audience Profiling finding out the profile of your audience before hand so that you can put across your message to the right people in the most effective way to produce the best result. It might include details like age, sex, educational qualification, work experience, financial background, field of work, interests, mood, orientation, bias, food habits, religious background, physique, health condition etc.


HA9 Task 2 - Secondary Research

The audience for GTA 5 is not simply hormone-fueled teenage boys in their bedrooms. Ofcom’s 2012 survey of adult media habits found that a quarter of those questioned played console games on a regular basis. Studies suggest that as much as 47 per cent of the gaming audience is female.

While most people imagine teenagers staying up into the early hours playing violent computer games, there was an 'uncharacteristic spike' in the number if 55 to 64-year-olds playing the new game.
